cain, lindsey graham, and joe lieberman. listen to this exchange on susan rice on whether the president nominates her she should be confirmed. >> on this one, we were going to prove that the three amigos cannot agree and still be amigos. i think the rest is up to the future and unfortunately i'll be watching it on tv. >> personally, don't think she would serve the country well in that capacity. >> i'm willing to give her the nomination process, but she's got a lot to prove. >> from a strictly partisan democratic political point of view, would it be wise for the president to pick this fight for two of those amigos and a whole bunch of other republicans? >> it's a great question, wolf. why would the president nominate susan rice if it's just going to make she's guys mad? but here are the facts. if the president has actually -- didn't nominate ambassador rice for that reason, we would essentially be giving in to a narrative. for that reason, giving in to a narrative which is just false. which is that somehow the administration withheld the information which they did not do. for john mccain

're a month into-- after the election, and we've had all the controversy over susan rice, and who know where's tha that is? what's happening? what's going on here? >> well, the administration is, as it says, studying all its options. what it's trying to figure out a way if in fact it wants to make the susan rice fight which is visually going to be a difficult fight, and if it does, how hard will it fight and how far is it willing to push? there are those who argue, look, if you put cbs news rice in the national security council and i will put senator kennedy up-- >> kerry. >> senator kerry from the senate up to nominate for secretary of state. the problem with that is tom donnell and the existing national security adviser doesn't want to leave and has no intention of going. that's complicated math inside the white house, and for the administration. all the other positions, the thought is, jacques lugar goes to treasury, to replace secretary geithner, but who would replace him as chief of staff. >> tom donelan. >> the final decisions haven't been made and there are a lot of pieces on the ches

on susan rice and benghazi. you have been very strong run that. will she make it? >> i don't know if she is nominated or not. she deserves a process that every nominee goes through and no additional concerns about our role as far as africa is concerned. the fact is she not only gave wrong information but she gave the party line that for example at al qaeda is decimated. they are not decimated. that our embassies and consulates are secure. there are not secure. everybody, we are responsible for what we say. we will go to the process if she is nominated and we will see. >> would you have an objection to her getting the job? >> who gets the job is up to the president. >> would you object? >> on this one we are going to prove the three amigos will disagree and still be amigos. here's what i would say. of all the intelligence we had before she went on tv on that sunday morning and went over her comments, she is not disqualified based on anything she said. but the rest is up to the future and unfortunately i will be watching on tv. >> i disagree with joe. the intelligence was sanitized to crea

of the things we heard from secretary clinton this week was her defensive viewing of ambassador susan rice who continues to come under fire from some republicans for comments she made on the attack in the u.s. consulate in benghazi. take a listen. >> susan rice has done a great job as our u.n. ambassador. she has been a stalwart colleague in a lot of the tough decisions that we've had to make. and certainly with respect to defending our national interests and national security at the united nations. >> so clinton is also going to testify on benghazi next week. what are the politics of all of this for secretary clinton? and are there risks for her here? >> i don't think there are necessarily risks for her here as long as she stays out of the whole fray of susan rice and congressional republicans. there's an awful lot going on on that score, but i tnk hillary clinton may be able to keep herself above all that. by the way, we keep expecting the white house for this rice situation to be resolved. we fully expect president clinton to make -- excuse me, president obama to make his announcement about

character. i saw his criticism of susan rice. i had some criticism myself. he was asking questions that needed to be asked, as we get answers, that will solve those problems. >> let me ask you one other thing when it comes to the mode of investigation that our government is now employing. i said it off the top of this introduction to you, that the fbi has now taken to facebook and twitter. look, you can say what you want about that being an investigative technique but facebook and twitter were widely credited for the arab spring uprisings all across the arab world so you can't make light that that is a pretty powerful tool. it may just sound we're kind of at wit's end. i'm not going to suggest you can give me information that's classified, but do you have a good sense at least that they're getting momentum with the tools they can use, that they're making headway in their investigation in libya? >> well, i understand from senator kerry we are going to have a report on the accountability review board before the end of this year. that's the next three weeks. they must be making some p

they see the republicans going after susan rice for four or five weeks or for three or four weeks. they now see the republicans seemingly standing in the way of a deal that could cost them in terms of their paychecks, money coming out of their paychecks at the expense of protecting rich people. that's what they see. that's what they take in. then they're asked, you know, who do you blame? there's only one obvious answer to most people, the republicans. they're going to bear the brunt of this. they are doing tremendous damage to their brand. and they have done tremendous damage to their brand over the last ten months during the election cycle and now during this negotiating process. >> they certainly have. i would only add a kauf yaccave stein, if republicans want to destroy their brand for good, make the term "republican" absolutely meaningless, go ahead and support tax increases without getting appropriate cuts, corresponding cuts. and this idea that some are suggesting that they just cave because it will make things easier, no. if they cave, raise taxes and get nothing in return of substa

the attack with susan rice and her comments. i want to get it back to the president and the secretary of state and they bear responsibility for what happened on 9/11. jon: well, secretary clinton has already said that the buck stops with her as far as diplomatic security. eric nordstrom, who was in charge of security on the ground, has already testified before congress saying that he had asked for more security and it was rejected at the state department headquarters. is that secretary clinton's responsibility? >> well it seems that the president should have known about the level of recruitment going on for al qaeda-linked terrorists right in that area. it was a hotbed. it was really a center of recruiting right there in eastern libya. so i want to know why the president continued to speak of having al qaeda on the run when in fact that is not the case at all. we saw them getting stronger, more forceful and the story that he was telling the american people i think now is going to come out was a story to deceive the american people but certainly to mislead them. jon: you started off th
